Waikato's Postgraduate Diploma in Management Studies (PGDip(MgtSt)) is aimed at business owners and middle managers who wish to take their career to the next level.
It will equip you with broad knowledge and skills required for effective management in all the core functional areas, giving you a holistic view of organisations, and provide a global understanding of business.
You'll discuss everything from strategic thinking and leading high-performance teams, through to digital business technologies, global competitiveness, change management, investment decision-making and financial analysis.
The course is taught part-time over 1-2 years in an interactive learning environment that draws on participants’ own business experience. This allows you to directly apply new ideas and business theories to a variety of workplace situations.
Classes are offered in Hamilton or Tauranga on weeknights or weekends.
Learning is through practical coursework, case studies and class discussion.
This programme is ideal for:
- Middle managers looking to step into higher-level leadership roles, who have at least three years’ relevant management experience
- Functional, technical or professional specialists moving into positions that require broader management knowledge and expertise

Stepping stone to the Waikato MBA
As well as being a valuable programme in its own right, those who complete the Postgraduate Diploma in Management Studies with a B grade average have the option of transferring into the Waikato Master of Business Administration (MBA); a higher-level qualification that emphasises leadership.

Study options - Hamilton or Tauranga
Enjoy the freedom to study part-time while you work, with classes offered in Hamilton or Tauranga.
Classes start in February/March and finish in mid-December.
Option 1: Hamilton - One year
- Monday and Thursday evenings, 6pm - 9pm. One year, starting February.
Option 2: Hamilton - One year
- Alternate weekends, Friday 2pm - 6pm and Saturday 8.30am - 5pm. One year, starting March.
Option 3: Hamilton - Two years
- Monday evenings, 6pm - 9pm. Two years, starting February.
Option 4: Tauranga - Two years
- Alternate Saturdays, 8.30am - 5pm. Two years, starting March.
Personal leadership development
Professional development is an important theme of the Postgraduate Diploma in Management Studies. We give our students the opportunity to grow not only as managers but to develop as leaders too.
You'll be asked to nominate a mentor for the duration of the programme, who will act in a support role. He or she can be a senior manager in your own workplace, or someone in another organisation.
You'll gain a deeper understanding of your own strengths and weaknesses as a leader through a tailored programme of personal development. This will include evaluations related to emotional intelligence, personality type, team roles and 360-degree feedback.
Complementing this will be a one-on-one leadership clinic to discuss your individual development needs and prepare an action plan.
Teaching and learning facilities
Our teaching facilities at Waikato are second-to-none. In 2016 we opened a brand new Executive Education suite, offering spacious learning areas for our MBA participants.
The University of Waikato also boasts a world-class Library, giving students free access to thousands of textbooks, journal articles, business magazines, and online databases - so the most up-to-date information is at your fingertips.
You can apply for the Postgraduate Diploma in Management Studies if you have:
- A bachelor's degree, or another tertiary or relevant professional qualification; and
- At least three years' relevant management experience; or
- No tertiary qualification but have at least 5-7 years' relevant management experience.
Note: This programme is taught part-time, so is NOT open to international students unless they are permanent residents of New Zealand. However, you may be interested in applying for the Master of Business and Management (MBM) degree instead.
